Episode 10 Memo From Purgatory Alfred Hitchcock Hour: Season 3 - Tomatometer Episode Info A writer (James Caan) joins a gang to gather material for a book. A dishonest lawyer takes over a rich widow's holdings but underestimates her companion's (Geraldine Fitzgerald) wrath. Forsythe was a fine choice for the role, never losing audience sympathy no matter the difficulty he puts himself through. Like the best episodes, there is a final twist that makes a great show truly unforgettable. There are a multitude of eyewitnesses who all claim "I saw the whole thing," but under insightful questioning from Barnes prove to be not entirely reliable, except for one motorist (John Fiedler) whose insistent testimony cannot be shaken. Deciding to represent himself, Barnes is greatly concerned about his pregnant wife, hospitalized for the duration of the trial and unaware of his plight, which grows even more perilous when it begins with the sad news that the victim has succumbed to his injuries. Then best known for BACHELOR FATHER, John Forsythe stars as crime author Michael Barnes, who turns himself in the morning after a hit-and-run accident at a busy intersection involving a motorcyclist who suffers a concussion and some broken bones. So this show won me over due to these two guys rising beyond my low expectations."I Saw the Whole Thing" was only the fourth episode of THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK HOUR, and, incredibly, the only one directed by Hitch himself. I also admit I've never been a fan of Carmel either but he's very good here and has a layer of meanness that is lacking in his Star Trek, Mudd character. I've never been much of a Lawford fan but this stands out to me as a perfect use of his persona and well acted from him as well. ![]() ![]() The ending though is not so great and pretty much a standard type of TV ending but the show is worth watching. The story does have a few surprises to it, though none of them really work as shocks, at least it's not totally predictable. Not much style to the direction, there is one kind of long camera move that does stand out. But it's all kind of claustrophobic in a cheap way and their corporate rivalry doesn't have any real urgency to it but the actors and writing makes it hold your interest most of the way. You do detest the guy and his big smarmy, I-got-you-now, grin. Summary: In a retelling of the classic chiller, The Monkeys Paw, a man realizes too late the evil powers of a monkeys paw that grants its owner three wishes. An older husband becomes very disenchanted with his wife at their new beach house, and has a devious plan for her. With Alfred Hitchcock, Arthur Kennedy, Phyllis Thaxter, Royal Dano. 6 92 How to With John Wilson: Season 3 7 90 Barry: Season 4 8 88 Star Wars: Visions: Season 2 9 88 The Great: Season 3. Carmel calmly but viciously quotes various philosophers to justify his own crappy behavior and things just seem to get worse and worse for Lawford. Change of Address: Directed by David Friedkin. The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: Season 3: Episode 10. And it works, you do actually root for Lawford as his pompous brother, played by Star Trek pseudo comedy recurring character actor Carmel. Peter Lawford is perfect as someone who is smugly happy with himself at being more successful then he deserves to be and then suddenly has it all brutally taken from him by someone who, amazingly, is truly less likable than he is. Alfred Woodard, and Rattlesnake in a Cooler, with Leo Burmester and Danny.
